During the War of the Roses, the family had backed the wrong side and lost all their property and titles. By this time, they had reacquired enough of their wealth that William embarked at Millford Co. Pembroke England with a troop of horse 24/2/1650 and landed at Youghal Co. Cork. He had raised the troop himself but then joined as a captain in Major Peter Wallis' troop of horse in Henry Cromwell's regiment. As a result of this service and partly by purchase of land grants made to the men in his service, he acquired the lands of Ballyfarmage (later known as Aldertown Oldcourt and Bally Kelly in the parish of Whitechurch Barony of Shelbourn Co. Wexford.) When William arrived in Ireland, he fixed his residence at Aldertown (then called Ballyfarmage later Aldertown Oldcourt) Co. Wexford. The John Henry Glascott genealogy I was working with says that William came from the County of Essex after the Irish Rebellion of 1641 "as a Captain in Major Peter Wallis' troop of horse in Cromwell's Regiment". Another note says that he purchased a "Bishop's Lease" of Aldertown Co. Wexford July 6 1664 also got grants of Oldcourt, Ballykelly and Knocked? in same county Nov 23 1666. His will was dated Sept 26 1671 with a codicil June 21 1677. Probate granted Aug 16 1677. Year of birth is a guesstimate by C.M.Richards 2001. Other Information taken from tree prepared by John Henry Glascott (now in the Dublin National Library) by Ann Belanger.
daughter of James Rowles. I have also seen references to Alice Philpott as his wife. Philpott was the daughter of James Philpott of Bandon Co. Cork. These two ladies may be one in the same since both their names and their fathers' are the same.
