Note on Husband: James WHITAKER - shared note

Notes re James Whitaker sent to me by Robert Churchward Sept 2003 James enlarged the property and continued the Bacup Pack of Hounds again after his Father. A cherubic, bewigged Georgian man as he appears when he sat for his portrait circa 1769, separately with his wife, and also had his 4 children painted with their pet dogs. Reputed to have first been bethrothed to Humphry Trafford's daughter and co- heiress. She however eloped with someone else. It is alleged she arrived one summer dawn at Broadclough; riding pillion with her "paramour" and threw a stone up at James's bedroom window before bidding farewell!! James soon picked up a beauty but with little breeding who the rest of the Whitaker family described as the 'cook'. She bore him 4 children and married again after his death (George Ormerod).
