Note on Husband: Abraham WHITAKER - shared note

Year of birth is a guesstimate. I have not yet found his baptism. The Woodkirk registers start in 1652 but the early years are very sparse. There are Bishop's Transcripts for Woodkirk starting in 1600 but they don't include 1640-1659. It is possible that he is the son of Abraham Whitaker of Gildersome in the Parish of Batley (will 1670) but there is no baptism entry for him in the Batley Parish Registers. Dickenson's register1702-1744 records the burial of Abraham Whitaker of Topliffe on Jan 26 1720 see http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/northowram. The registers of Topcliffe say it was 1721/2. The original is hard to read but I was convinced it did say 1721 not 1720. The Topcliffe Register of Burials edited by William Smith & Published by Longmans in 1888 says that he was the gt grandfather of Samuel, John and Joseph Wetherill of Millshaw http://www.leeds.gov..uk/fol/fol_41.html records that Topcliffe Hill OS ref SE281271 is now a plantation and part of the Forest of Leeds having been an industrial site. On Genuki there is a reference to an old directory of the 1820s that says that Topcliffe was 2 farm houses in the township of West Ardsley and parish of Woodkirk, liberty of Wakefield, 4.5 miles south of Leeds Philip Ramsden lists the names of tenants of The Earl of Cardigan as listed on a 1735 map drawn by Wil Sykes including Abraham Whittaker and Issac Whittaker in Lee Fair. Toleration act of 1682 A congregation or Assembly of Protestant subjects Dissenting from the Church of England dow hold their meeting for religious worship on the Lords Dayes in Toplife Hall, Woodkirk and they hold other occasional meetings at Jo Pickering's House at Tingley; signed by Jo Pickering Tho Atkinson In 1682 it is recorded in the Leeds session call book that for six or seven years great numbers of people have gone to Toplife Hall to an Independent conventicle... Notes re Woodkirk (West Ardsley) George Whitaker was vicar of Woodkirk 1582 - 1600 (St Mary's Woodkirk website) Christopher Marshall was vicar 1650 -1662. He held dissenting services in the church.

Note on Wife: Elizabeth WALKER - shared note

I am not certain that the Elizabeth daughter of John Walker of Heckmondwike is the same Elizabeth Walker who married Abraham Whitaker. But she is the only Elizabeth Walker that I have found in the Birstall PRs who was baptised at about the right time The record in the register of Morley old chapel says clearly that she was the wife of Abraham Whitaker of Topcliffe
