Educated Eton & Royal Agric College, Cirencester High Sheriff of Yorks 1956 Major Francis Roger Ingham TD, KStJ Major Roger Ingham died peacefully at his home, Bellwood Hall, nr Ripon on Monday 29th May. Major Ingham was a well-known Ripon and Littlethorpe personality, always upright and very well groomed. He served in the Yorkshire Dragoons in World War 2 until repatriated from Palestine in 1940 when his two brothers and an uncle (Captain Bernard Warburton-Lee VC, RN ) were killed in separate engagements within a month of each other. He married Edna (nee Fox) in 1943. Edna died in 1988 and was greatly missed by many Riponians, as much for her lovely sense of fun as for her generous support of local causes. Having wound up family mining interests in 1947 he became proprietor of a tannery in Leeds, he was chairman of Kirkstall Discount and more latterly he was chairman of Croft and Blackburn, a local company which became the main North Yorkshire Mercedes dealership during his tenure. Major Ingham was High Sheriff of Yorkshire in in 1956/7 and one of his most memorable duties was to attend upon The Queen at the launching of The Royal Yacht Britannia on Teeside. He was a Freeman of the City of London, a Liveryman of the Leathersellers Company and served as an Inland Revenue Commissioner. He had many charitable interests and, he was appointed Knight of the Order of St John for his services in support of the Order. He was particularly proud, with Edna, to have been one of the founder lay Governors of the Ripon Cathedral Choir School. He was a Sidesman at St Michael's, Littlethorpe for a numner of years. We have happy memories of Roger alternating bell ringing duties with Leon Smallwood. He loved his native Yorkshire; he was a trained land agent and he served briefly as assistant agent at Chatsworth. His love of the country and country pursuits was legendry. He was a superb shot and organised some marvelous days for syndicates at Clifton, Newby and Nidd. He was one of the regular guns at Swinton for more than 20 years. He shared an interest in Hawksworth, Bingley and Braddup grouse moors. He also loved his stalking and as a younger man his hunting too. He was a Steward at Wetherby for many years. He died peacefully at Bellwood Hall, Littlethorpe having enjoyed a family celebration for his 92nd Birthday just 11 days previously. His son Philip, his daughter Jane Wardle, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren survive him.
She was formerly the wife of Major Hon Sir Thomas William Assheton Frankland 11th Bt In the 1965 edition of Burke: Landed Gentry he is recorded as "The late.."
